My students look forward to coming to the Writing Lab now. This wasn't always the case. I strategically plan rich, engaging writing lessons that would nurture the needs of budding authors. What's even more important in my planning is considering the unique experiences that my students face in their communities. As a Title I school, funds are limited while expectations for student achievement run high. I've learned that the more students and I laugh at trying out various forms of voice in writing or race to restructure the organization of a completed piece, their appetite for more opportunities to write increases. However, my time with the students is extremely limited. I often wonder what it would be like if I saw each class more than once a week; but, with schedule restraints, it is impossible. Gator Ink! will provide a vehicle for students to apply the writing skills they have learned through a student-centered, school-wide communication system. This in-school postal service would elicit excitement about writing as students would be able to write and receive letters to/from their peers, teachers, administrators and their parents. The very act of writing a letter, folding and packing it into an envelope, addressing and sealing it, and applying a stamp is becoming a lost art. I can't imagine the gleeful anticipation that students will have to drop their letter into the postal collection box in the center hallway of the school-- that resembles the classic blue box at the post office but designed with our school's mascot--and, more so, when they receive a hand-delivered letter by a Gator Ink! letter carrier. The indelible writing opportunities will include school-wide responses based on specific topics, competitions, free writes, student proposals and more! Your donations will help "stamp out illiteracy"!
