My students all come from low income and/or government-subsidized housing. They love coming to music class because I take what they know of music in their culture and teach them where it came from and the theory behind it. Many of these students have not had exposure to multiple genres of music, so I make sure to show them how music truly is universal, whether from a go-go band in DC or a string quartet in Vienna.
