My students are resilient. Often, they do not know how many obstacles they have to overcome on a daily basis to learn. Growing up in rural America has, somewhat, limited their learning but also given them great potential for growth. Rural spaces can be insular and the people that live in them often face the pressure of deciding on whether to stay in the familiar or leave in hopes of a career. As the son of a farmer and someone who deeply believes in the strength of rural communities, I know my students have what it takes to succeed. In returning to South Carolina to teach in a rural area, I am committed to making a difference in public education. My main objective for my students as a social studies teachers is to help them achieve a level of self-awareness, along with transferable work/life skills, so they can choose to stay and make a good living in a rural area or chase their dreams elsewhere.
