My students are hoping to establish a youth garden on campus. This garden would be maintained and overseen by students in the alternative school setting, but will be available to all students once it gets established and starts to grow. A youth garden will allow students who are struggling with behavioral issues to improve relationships, increase accountability, develop social skills, and foster a sense of community and responsibility on campus. Activities in the garden will be designed and developed to address STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering, and math. Students will be in charge of calculating and measuring soil and fertilizer needs, practicing and developing water conservation techniques, and researching different plants and learning how to grow them. For this project, I have requested assistance for an indoor classroom garden, which will allow students to propagate plants and nurture seedlings during colder weather. I have also requested an outdoor garden bed, which will be used to start the first section of our outdoor garden.
