Fast cars with cool paint jobs! Students are challenged with designing and manufacturing CO2-powered race cars that’ll zoom down hallways. This project will encourage students to explore the engineering design process and engage in teamwork, all while learning how to use shop tools. Students learn best when they are excited and engaged -- and I aim to create a space in which they can be both. I believe the place to begin is by acknowledging that many of them have entered my class with skills and knowledge than can be formalized and used to further their careers in the future. Many of my students have grown up seeing their parents work in construction, welding, manufacturing, or in the automotive industry. Giving them an opportunity to take what they have learned outside of school, and apply in this space will allow them to take ownership of their learning. During this project, my students will learn how to properly use machine tools like the band saw and drill press. I've chosen these two tools to highlight because they are so commonly used in trade work. Knowing how to properly work these tools and how to do so safely will benefit any of my students who will enter a technical college or the trade workforce after high school. The rest of the requested items will help me create a culture of safety. I want my students to understand that safety is imperative to a healthy worksite.
