I do not simply want to get my sixth graders reading -- I want them to enjoy it too! It's one thing for students to trudge through set texts in a lesson and learn reading comprehension strategies, but it's quite another to develop a true love of reading. Research has repeatedly shown that motivation to read decreases with age and, by sixth grade, many students express an apathy for reading and believe its importance begins and ends in the classroom. My goal is to expose my students to a range of high interest books that will allow them to see that reading is more than just a subject; it is a way to open a window to the world and experience different cultures and perspectives. I want my kids to believe that reading has the power to broaden their perspective and change their lives.
