Even though my scholars are in fourth grade, they love to engage in picture book reading. This allows them to physically see characters who mirror them and their experiences. It is powerful to find mirrors and relationships within our learning space, but also windows to see into other people's lives, their experiences, and views. The school district I teach in is the most diverse in our state and the 5th most diverse in the nation. Picture books are some of the most flexible of all literary texts. Scholars are able to create meaning not only from the written text but also from the pictures. The possibilities to do things with picture books are endless!

About my class
