As a title 1 school, many of the students we serve receive free or reduced lunch, and as the only elementary school serving downtown Atlanta, our school has the largest homeless population. In order to better serve our population, our school has recently changed our instructional model to include project based inquiry learning with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). This shift in the way we teach our children will allow for students to engage in real world science inquiry, question the world around them, and work collaboratively to discover more about the world in which they live. Not only does this model prepare our children to be successful in the 21st century, it promotes intrinsic motivation for learning. Although many of our children come from less than ideal circumstances, it makes them no less capable of learning, mastering, and excelling in the science field.
