Working at Gateway Community Charters, my eyes have been opened to the realities of the lives my students live each day. From experiencing extreme pressure, to living in areas of violence and poverty, my students spend each day wanting to feel safe and loved. Though my students face a plethora of struggles and pressure outside of the classroom, they come in each day, eager and hungry to learn. When asked why they love being in my class and at school, they talk about how their teachers inspire them to be something bigger and better. They want to have the best education possible to better their future and to support their families. They want more for their lives - and I want more for them as well. Each one of my students face different obstacles each day in their home lives - school is their escape to focus on themselves, and to become the best they can be, academically and as a member of society.
