My students are in a self-contained setting for extensive support in academics and to access adapted therapies for their needs. The main eligibility for my students is Autism followed by other, and sometimes multiple, disabilities. Although we are mandated to implement grade level Common Core curriculum to our students, we spend a majority of our time teaching basic social skills. Students with severe autism and cognitive impairment are individuals who have greater difficulty with social skills, communication, and academic performance. Children with autism may also engage in more sensory-related activities such as hand flapping, spinning, or rocking. All of these common characteristics of Autism make it extremely challenging in finding the best teaching/ learning styles for the success of each individual. Although we transition as the general education students do, and eat in the lunchroom, our students are not quite ready to participate in other activities outside of our classroom.
