My students are children who have grown up on farms and in rural settings at the foothills of a mountain range much like the Ozarks in Wilson Rawls' book, Where the Red Fern Grows. Many of them come from families who are impoverished, like Billy's, and have parents who did not receive more than a high school education at best. Many of these families value hard work more than education, and as such, students do not learn to love reading at home. School is the place where a love of literature, language and learning must be nurtured.
