There is a common saying, "Kids need to Maslow before they can Bloom." This means that students need to have their safety and emotional needs met before they begin to progress academically. Being able to identify their emotions is a huge part of understanding their emotional needs. Emotional intelligence is something I strive to teach all of my students. During the COVID-19 outbreak, my students were asked everyday what zone(s) (Zones of Regulation) they were in that day. While this time was tough on all of our students, this helped them to communicate their needs to their families and teachers, while also allowing themselves to do a daily check on how they feel. While knowing how one feels comes naturally to some students, other students need examples that are presented in a variety ways. This allows students to generalize identifying emotions in many different situations and scenarios. This is why this project is important for my classroom.
