My students are learning English and therefore don't always have the language required to engage with the curriculum despite their interest in learning. Technology provides my students with access to ideas and concepts they may not have otherwise been able to internalize. It is a powerful medium that bridges language gaps. Unfortunately most come from low-income homes that do not always have these technological resources. We need a laptop in order to enhance our learning and connect our small classroom community with the outside world. My students will use the laptop to explore, investigate and ultimately appreciate the topic of energy. Our research and learning will be exponentially enhanced through the laptop by allowing us to take virtual tours of energy sites, using Skype to interview those working in the field, interactive material, visuals, videos and native language support. Groups of students will become experts on different energy topics: Defining Energy, Production, Conversion, Sources, Forms, Distribution and Uses. They will create blogs to teach others about their findings and be able to tweet each other questions. Following, they will all research the connection between energy and the environment to understand the negative impacts, ways to conserve energy as well as different groups that are working to solve energy issues. Each group will create a PSA that informs others of the problems, solutions and possible ideas as well as steps everyone can take to conserve energy. Your contribution will help take my students learning to new heights! It will not only foster a love of science but also show students that there is a world beyond ourselves that we have the power to shape in order to create a better tomorrow. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and support.
