I teach reading and writing to high need middle school students in Tacoma, Washington. My students are struggling readers, with many reading at an elementary level. On top of that, I teach in the highest poverty school district in all of Pierce County. Many of my students are faced with insurmountable obstacles, causing them to feel stressed and frustrated with their environment and apathetic toward school. I wish to supply my students with high interest novels that will engage them in reading and also help further develop their reading and writing skills. Their lack of exposure to exciting reading materials not only puts them at a severe academic disadvantage, but it also denies them the joy of being able to explore the world through reading. Much of the world is unknown to them, but through reading they can explore the experiences of others and build big dreams and goals for themselves.
