Students need to see that they can relate to others. The stories in the books I've chosen will help them find more confidence in themselves. Being from an inner-city school, seeing the character go through the same reality my students live each day is so incredible beneficial. These characters are people just like them-- just like their friends, family, neighbors. Highlighting key stories with this level of relatability will help them see there are more sides to a story. There are more pathways to take, than what seems black and white. Books like these will bring concepts like what I've stated within their grasps.
