The students who are in this program often have high sensory needs. With the program being so new, we do not currently have the budget to take care of all of our students' sensory needs at this time. Meeting the sensory needs of our students in this program could assist in avoiding problem behaviors as well as help in calming children during meltdowns. By providing them with a sensory outlet, we can allow them to explore the general education setting more readily and their academic standings would improve significantly; as they can be more focused on their academics when they are in a more comfortable setting. Some of our students with sensory needs have a sensitivity to noise. We have noticed that these students are often missing out on the fun activities with their peers due to the noise level. This is actually what lead us to create this project; the need for noise cancelling headphones and then we decided to expand it to help ALL of the sensory needs. Another item selected in this project is alternate lighting resources, such as light covers, to help minimize hyperactivity and lack of focus due to bright lighting in the classrooms. We also have pillows, clay, music boxes, fiber optic light fidgeting toys, weighted lap pads, etc. for students to release anxiety or any other negative emotion throughout the school day. Sensory items are often the key to calming students down and with the help of our community and friends, we can provide a more calming environment in the school setting. With that being said, we would love to provide these students with exactly what they need to succeed both mentally, physically and academically! These students are the face of our future, so help me set them up for success!
