My students come from a wide range of cultures and countries, and my school becomes an interesting melting pot of cultures. The majority of my students come from high-poverty situations, and are grateful to have any help reaching their goals of getting out of poverty. A large majority of my students either go on to college or a trade school. Since we live in Texas, where there is a huge Spanish speaking population, I emphasize learning basic conversational Spanish that they will be able to take and use for the rest of their lives regardless of what type of job they end up in. My classroom is a hands on learning environment that is largely project based learning. We complete 8 major projects each school year; both in and out of class. Through these projects my students gain a better understanding of both the Spanish language and the cultures that speak it.
