While my students have various opportunities to move their bodies throughout the day (transitions, brain breaks, entering/exiting the classroom, turning in work, etc.), they are expected to do their best work for several hours, while sitting in the same seats. What if the traditional seating model is not each student’s best option for success? In Room 15, we would like to adapt our classroom to provide alternative options from the standard desk and chair. With flexible seating, we will be creating a student-centered learning environment. With a group of diverse learners with varying needs, it can be difficult to find a system that works for everyone. With your support, my students will have the option of using stools, lap desks, stability balls, seat cushions, and various chairs. These options will allow my students to find the seating that creates the optimal learning environment for them. With this power of choice, student engagement will increase and negative behaviors will decrease. During whole-group instruction, students will sit on the carpet, but during independent or group work time, they will choose their workspace. Not only will the ability to make a choice be motivating for students, the seating options themselves will promote better focus and increased student engagement.
