In a high poverty, rural area, my students go without many materials. As a teacher I have learned to substitute where I can and make due without. As an educator of young children, I am aware that literacy is something that can not be substituted or forgotten. My students need environments where books are at their disposal. My students need to a variety of books that a classroom library will supply. When students are given choice they are more likely to involve themselves in their learning. With a choice of what books they look through or have read to them, they are choosing to read, choosing to learn. My students are lower level learners who are still trying to figure out how they learn and weather or not they enjoy it. They are at an important age, where teachers matter and what we say impacts them. By giving them the materials to learn, we are helping them grow, we are choosing them, with the hopes that they one day choose themselves.
