Hello, I currently teach a preschool classroom in Raceland, Kentucky. I service children with varying ability levels between ages 3 and 5 years old. Early childhood education is the key to fostering social/emotional, communication, motor, and cognitive skills in children. We achieve this through developmentally appropriate practice such as child-directed play. Piaget and Vygotsky had similar opinions on the benefits of dramatic play, a child-directed learning experience. The book "Developmentally Appropriate Practice" notes that Piaget believed that dramatic play enabled children to "take control of experiences in which they have little or no control in real life" and Vygotsky saw dramatic play opportunities as "uniquely supportive of self-regulation."(Bredekamp & Copple, 2009, p. 131). Children are able to be the leaders in their learning!
