I work at one of Los Angeles' poorest public schools. My students are Latino immigrants and children of immigrants in hard-working but struggling families. Yet my kids are like adolescents across the nation: they care about their family and friends, they love pop culture, video games, social media and every other type of technology. They get mad about injustice and are just learning that they can do something to make a difference. Fortunately, many of my students also love to read. Books open the world world up to my kids at a particularly important age. Books help them see people and the world from different perspectives and imagine new possibilities for themselves and new ways of being.
