I teach in a high achieving school with a diverse student population. Some students entered my first grade class reading on a third grade level, others were reading on a kindergarten level. The students love stories and love when I read aloud to them. They are engaged and active listeners. We practice many skills like retelling and story structure. Most of my students are eager to unlock the secrets to decoding and comprehension. In class we might read together, buddy read, read in groups on just read on our own. The places we can read vary. I try to make reading a comfortable endeavor. What I lack is a place for guided reading. Right now I do it on the floor in circle. Not exactly comfortable. I would like a place for the students to sit down at an inviting table and explore the magic. So many students are tied to electronics, a chance to have a physical book and read is a gift I want my students to enjoy reading every day in the class.
