By adding this book to our curriculum, students will be able to join the conversation about race. Our library is currently filled with white authors, and so is our curriculum. By adding this book, students will be able to learn about the struggles of racial inequity even though they aren’t currently in the school building. By reading this book during the pandemic, and during this time of political upheaval, students will be connected to the past, and learn ways to address racial inequality in their own communities. Additionally, this book, which is part of the literary cannon of classics, allows students to branch out, and to learn about James Baldwin’s life, since this book is semi-autobiographical. Wonderful.
