The materials requested will allow my students to use their creativity to assist our mentally impaired students in the school. The students will be creating ornaments using math skills. The requested Cricut maker will be used to cut and score the ornaments to assist in the folding. Several of my current students have physical impairments that prevent them from being able to cut things smoothly. One student, in particular, has cerebral palsy in his hands. He has difficulties with any projects that involve using scissors. The Cricut maker will allow his projects to resemble the other students' projects in the class. I would like for my students to be able to work with our lower functioning students in the school to also be able to create an ornament. The scoring blade will make it easier for those students to make the folds required to create the geodesic ornament. Recycled Christmas cards are used to create the ornaments. The grip mats are required to be able to put the recycled cards through the Cricut maker. In the past, we have had requests to make the ornaments to sell. I have never taken this approach but instead would like to be able to create more of the ornaments to donate to the local nursing homes at Christmas time. The materials purchased are not for one time use. The materials will be able to be used for many years. I have several other ideas for the Cricut maker, such as creating positive self-esteem quotes for our hallways. Eventually, I would like to be able to learn more about using the material feature and collaborate with our home economic teacher on a cross-curriculum project.
