My students are creative and enthusiastic middle schoolers, but they haven't had much experience outside their own neighborhoods. Poverty has limited their exposure to people who are mostly just like them. They need to see how other people live, work, play, worship, celebrate, and suffer. They need to feel how other people feel. I want to broaden my students' horizons with books and technology. I want them to understand the world around them and be able to reflect on it and evaluate it armed with knowledge. I want my students to understand who they are and how they fit into a complex world.
