In my 2nd grade classroom, I have the opportunity to expose my students to a wide range of literature. Books have the power to connect children to one another across race and culture. It is more important than ever to help children celebrate diversity and build bridges of empathy within our schools and communities. I am requesting a variety of books including What If..., Drum Dream Girl, Alma and How She Got Her Name, Islandborn, Malala's Magic Pencil, I Am Enough, Let the Children March, Separate Is Never Equal, You, Me and Empathy, Jabari Jumps, Emmanuel's Dream, The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade, and Shaking Things Up: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World. These titles will expose my young students to characters with a wide range of skin colors. They will hear names, words, and places that they may have never encountered before. As we read and discuss these multicultural books, I can help my students to develop the empathy, compassion, and citizenship that they need to become leaders in the future.
