"I'm not really a math person..." "I'm so sorry! I HATED math in school." "I had to change my major because I just couldn't pass the math requirement." When you tell someone you teach math, especially in middle school, you can expect more condolences than congratulations. Most people experience more anxiety and frustration in math class than any place else in school. If students are going to let go of their past perceptions of math and move toward embracing the power of problem solving, they need to feel physically comfortable. Secondary school students spend up to eight hours a day sitting in hard, plastic chairs being told to keep still and focus - that simply isn't how humans learn best! I hope to create a feeling of "home" in my classroom by providing a cozy, cafe-style study nook for my students where they can work together to resolve points of confusion. The area will consist of an rug, standing lamp, and coffee table that I already have. In addition, I would like to add four comfy bean bag chairs with lap desks to use as a work-space. Two more lap-desks can be used on a small love seat I am bringing in from home. Additionally, many of my students are learning to manage ADD and ADHD. One strategy that has been shown to help students focus through distraction is standing while working, which allows for more movement of feet, hips, and knees. This increases blood flow and promotes healthy backs and joints for students. I would like to offer two standing desks as a workspace choice for students who prefer to get out of their hard plastic chairs. With your help, I know I can create a learning oasis!
