My science stools have been dubbed "back breakers" by my students due to the lack of back support. I have noticed many occasions where they choose to stand or are visibly uncomfortable. In an end of the year survey I gave my students, almost 50% made a comment about seating choices in the "What would you change about our classroom?" question. I have received several requests from my students for other types of seating. A combination of bean bag chairs, yoga balls, and seats with backs will help them to not only be more comfortable (assisting with learning), but also to promote working in small groups. These flexible seating choices will allow my students (especially those with physical ailments) an opportunity to more effectively learn by increasing their comfort level, in addition to fostering group work. Flexible seating choices will also serve to teach my students the values of sharing and cooperation with others.
