My students need quality children’s books and novel sets to engage, motivate and develop their love for reading. Reading is incredibly important; it develops our minds. Most of my students rely on the library for books and/or online sources. I strongly believe that developing a love for reading starts with the feel and smell of a great book! I limit my students' screen time and provide tangible books when I can. The only problem is, I only have one novel set for an advanced group and miscellaneous books I’ve collected from old students! Since I previously taught sixth grade and was gifted most of my books from veteran teachers, I have very little books for my students. The books I have requested for this project will help support my goals and ambitions for my students. They are well known and will target my diverse groups to create lessons to meet each of my students’ needs. The picture books foster independent reading for my students as well as make a perfect mentor text to strengthen our writing skills. This week, I have started our year long unit on Growth Mindset where students learn that they are in control of their ability to learn and improve everyday! Psychologist Carol Dweck explains a growth mindset view “creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment”. Along with my novels, I have included books that send a growth mindset message to my students that they are loved, unique and can change their negative emotions and transform them to positive ones!
