My autistic classroom was recently moved to a section of the school building that is a distance away from the student lockers. My students are in the grade levels that provide general education students a locker. Currently, I possess a cubby in my room, but I would love for them to have lockers to store their backpacks and belongings, without having to walk to the other side of the building. Life skills and the opportunities to relate to their non-disabled peers are important learning goals for my students. Having a locker would give them the opportunity to have a private space for their things, learn the skills to open and close a lock, and become responsible and independent with age-appropriate daily routines.
