The seats, pillows, carpets, and supplies chosen for this project will provide my students with a positive learning environment. When they enter into the classroom, I want them to feel like this is their classroom and have ownership in it.
Although the carpet at our school is cleaned every summer, it has not been replaced in 28 years. We spend a lot of time on the floor to meet as a whole group (morning meeting and instruction), brain breaks (YOGA and various exercises), and just a different area to work at throughout the day. The seats and some pillows will be located in the different centers to provide flexible seating during all subjects.
Teachers are expected to differentiate their teaching, so why not differentiate their seating, too? We are confined by desk and chairs that don't always help students learn. When students are presented with the choice as to where they can sit and how they're learning, I think we will see better results in their work and attitude towards learning.
