As my students read more rigorous text, their frustration level often skyrockets. When it is time for independent reading and writing in response to this reading, I allow my students to find a quiet place in the classroom to respond to what they are reading. We are requesting pillows, bean bag seats, lap desks and more for a place to unwind as they read and respond to what they read in writing or discussion. Building a reading nook would give them a space to unwind as they read, write and discuss various pieces of literature. The addition of the reading nook will give my students a tangible incentive that can be used everyday and provide comfort as they read, write, and discuss tough topics such as refugee treatment, acceptance, discrimination, and doing what is right no matter how unpopular that may be.
