Our school district (and our school) is small and all of our classrooms have mixed-ages. I teach students ranging from 3rd grade up through 7th grade. I want to help prepare these Alaskan children to live in both of the worlds that they find themselves growing up in - the "village" world and the "city" world. None of our district's villages are connected to anything else by roads - you must fly in or take a boat to every village. Just a few years ago our villages got access to cell phones - before that there simply wasn't any service or providers in our rural communities. A lot has changed over the past 5 years and I think many things will continue to change. The people here are some of the most caring and giving individuals I have ever met. Our community of about 100 people really comes together and supports one another any way they can - you don't see that too much anymore. I love working in this place!
