Circus performance skills are an effective way to help build community. We plan to offer a six-week workshop to our students on circus performance skills including individual and group juggling, walking a slack line, and tumbling. This course will be taught once each week by an experienced circus teacher, and my team and I will support students' learning on a daily basis outside of the workshop time, during recess and community activity times. The circus workshop will conclude with an open house for families, community members, and students at the high school campus to showcase what students are learning. Juggling is an activity with lots of opportunity for individual growth, creativity, and teamwork. When students master juggling, they naturally want to teach others and build complexity in how they perform the skills. Our students will be the first class in a new middle school campus. Our goal is to take cues from them to build a strong school culture and identify values important to them. In order to do this, we must help students step out of their comfort zone with confidence and strong collaboration skills. We hope this project will help us build community and lay the foundation for strong school culture. Thanks!
