My students are reading and comprehending two to three years below grade level. Most of them hate the act of reading and feel too inadequate to even try. They need books that speak to them on a personal level, so that they are motivated to put forth a greater effort. When they connect to what they are reading, they push themselves harder. Wonder by R.J. Palacio is an amazing book about a ten year old boy with a facial deformity who is going to school for the first time. I am requesting multiple copies of this book for my students. My students will be able to see themselves in August (the protagonist) who shows courage in extremely difficult circumstances. They will also see themselves in the supporting characters who are not always kind to August and be reminded that your actions become your character. This school year, I am focusing on themes of social justice. I believe it is crucial my students learn that even though there are many challenges ahead of them, they are strong enough to meet them head on. I want them to end their time with me being stronger readers and better people. Wonder by R.J. Palacio is the perfect novel to use.
