My students come from a small town in rural South Georgia. As a result of the economic recession, our once thriving railroad town has spiraled into the grips of desperation. The unemployment rate for our county has been at an astronomical high for the past five years. In fact, we have, unfortunately, one of the highest county unemployment rates in the state. Because of our economic standing, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. With poverty playing a major role in our community, many of our students count on school as the constant in their lives. Because our community is so small, we only have two schools--elementary and middle/high. I am an Intervention Specialist for 3rd-5th grade. Each week I provide standards-based remediation in reading and math for fluid groups of students. I also provide daily support in a variety of classrooms.
