The goal of the project "Robots of the 21st Century", is to provide gifted students an opportunity to get hands-on engineering skills and coding skills similar to what they may find in their future jobs. STEAM provides experiences in a variety of ways. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) is the wave of the future for all jobs now and those that haven't been created yet. The first concept behind STEAM in this project is to advance the student's science knowledge by actually manipulating items instead of just reading about them. Next, is the use of technology to research what robots are and how they have currently been used and then dream of new ways to use them. Technology also helps with teaching the students how to code the robot to make it functional. Part of this concept is to create a "Recycled Robot" including a blueprint of how to build it and a description of its purpose and how it will work for man's benefit. The engineering part is the actual building of a robot using a kit so they can learn about gears, transistors, resistors, and the brain, and etc. as well as how to provide it with energy to do its task. The arts bring the ability to read a blueprint and follow the directions to put the robot together. The student will also need to be able to use the blueprint to determine if they are constructing it correctly and how to determine a problem if one comes up. Math is everywhere and these activities should help the student determine that math is a very important skill to have in the design and execution of engineering or STEAM activities.
