I work in a fantastic, nationally recognized public high school; our mission is to graduate bilingual Mandarin and English speaking college ready students. As a dual language high school, native English speakers learn Mandarin Chinese while native Chinese speakers are placed in intensive English as a Second Language classes. Our school services a low-income, mostly Chinese immigrant community, over 90% of who qualify for free lunch. My students are hard-working and motivated, and it has been a privilege teaching them. Many of them face tremendous daily challenges as adolescent immigrants. All students are committed to an extra long school day, working hard to learn another language while taking a full high school course load that might even include multiple AP classes.
