Have you ever sat at a desk for too long and noticed that you lacked motivation and ability to focus? Asking a six or seven year old to sit at a desk for a long period of time is not one of the research based best practices of teaching. My goal is to create a classroom environment that allows students to stay comfortable, maintain focus, and ignite peer collaboration. The idea of transitioning my first grade students to marker board tables will allow students to interact and collaborate during our lessons. Some of their work can be produced right on the dry erase table tops. This option will likely motivate them to show their work and participate more often during daily lessons. By choosing a flexible seating option students will more likely produce their best work because they are comfortable. Each table will include a different seating option in which students can choose how they would like to work for that day. My classroom already includes many seating options including (bouncy balls, wobble stools, wobble cushions, lap desks and scoop seats). I am looking to transition away from desks and include tables which are developmentally more appropriate for this age level. I feel my flexible seating options would work better with collaborative tables than desks.
