Self-motivation and collaboration are two words I emphasize in the classroom, but how can I provide this experience to my students and teach mathematics at the same time? My students struggle with going beyond the basic and applying mathematical concepts to real-world experiences because most often they would state that they do not "like" math no matter how great and exciting of a teacher I am. This is why the escape room concept will be beneficial in building those concepts that the students need to learn while providing them with an engaging experience that will foster a lifetime of learning. It is an opportunity for the various learning styles that are in my classroom (kinesthetic, auditory, visual, etc.) to shine and see that mathematics is not something we need to escape from, but want to learn more of. Using conceptual tools, like calculators, coded locks and UV lights, enhances the learning experience and provides the hands-on tools that the students need to explore the mathematical concept with real-world applications.
