I teach approximately 100 extremely diverse 6th graders at a small charter school. They are diverse in their cultural backgrounds, talents and interests, and current reading levels. My students have varied experiences with English: some are monolingual, some read above grade level, some are bilingual, and some are learning English for the first time. They also have varied experience in the process of working with primary documents and artifacts. Though my students are anything but homogeneous, there is one thing we can all agree on: it's hard to improve our language and thinking skills when we can't see or interact with text and objects. We would like to have access to a variety of texts and resources to supplement our textbook, but finding enough materials for each student to work with can be cost-prohibitive. My students are eager to learn more about their world and a document camera would help us share unique objects, students' writing, and texts with each other on a daily basis.
