My students are motivated, passionate and curious learners in an alternative high school located on the South Side of Chicago. They range in age from 15 to 21 and hail from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and family structures. They are multicultural, multilingual, and LGBTQ. My 10th graders analyze social constructs and how they impact access to the American Dream. My 11th graders bring Shakespeare from page to stage and make connections between dystopian literature and modern society. My 12th graders delve deeply into narrative/memoir writing and hone their critical thinking skills in media literacy. My students' reading and writing strengths vary widely, but they all have stories that deserve to be shared. I strive to teach literacy across multiple media and inspire my students to read as much as they can and control who tells their stories, how they are told, and when they are told.
