Our school's guiding principals are all people want to be successful; a rigorous, high-quality education is a human right; and we have a responsibility to the community we serve. The global pandemic makes upholding these principle a little more challenging, but all the more crucial to uphold. This year, our class will have a book club. My students are developing readers, but they love a fun challenge. So as we practice the basics and develop solid reading habits, we will cultivate a love of reading and sharing ideas. We will read together or listen to books that the general education classes are reading, as well as books that we choose as a group, like book clubs do. Each student will get their own copies of the books we read so that they start to develop or add to their book collections. I picked the first book, Ikenga, by Nnendi Okorafor, one of my favorite authors. It's about boy learning to access his super powers. I think my students can relate.
