We do creative activities all year long with colored pencils, markers, glue, and scissors. In previous years, we have only had a class set of supplies. After the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, supplies are even harder to obtain as some are still facing financial struggle. With individual materials, my students will know not only is their work valued, each student is valued as well. Colored paper will be used for our class quilts displaying different cultures. They will cut, paste, and color symbols representing their culture. The students will often draw what they see in a reading and bring it to life with color. It helps them understand what is happening in the reading. Later in the year, the students will make several posters displaying theme, tone, and other literary elements of class readings. My students are encouraged to express themselves in their work which also provides creative and emotional outlets.
