My students come from a community that is 99% bilingual and low income. It is astonishing that 90% of my students don't have books in their homes and don't go to the library. All of my students are eager to become readers and writers so that they can one day go to college. The parents of most of my students know that their children are exposed to shootings and gang violence regularly, but can't afford to move out of the neighborhood. I consider myself not only a mentor and teacher to my students, but to their parents as well. I've even used some of my lower level texts to teach parents how to read and have had students teach their parents. My Kindergarten students are young and very impressionable, which is why it is crucial that I instill the love for literacy and learning within them.
