The students in my class are amazing kids, but due to early childhood trauma most of my students have a difficult time controlling their bodies and their emotions. My students come from such diverse, histories, background, and cultures, that having them all sit in a traditional school desk and plastic chair keeps their minds distracted. They are not able to move freely without creating distracting noises for their peers, and often become overwhelmed by their surroundings. By providing alternative seating for my students, they will be able to choose a seat that fits their needs better than a traditional desk. Letting students choose what kind of seat they like, not only gives them the power to make decisions, but to make decisions that directly affect their learning. When a student feels empowered by something, even as simple as choosing what kind of seat they will use for the day, they begin to take pride in their achievements, and in-turn, themselves. My students need the feeling of pride in their surrounding and themselves, not only to succeed in academics, and school, but to help guide them on their road to success as adults in our community.
