I have five Math classes which brings together 148 students from diverse backgrounds. These classes represent a mix of culture, languages, national backgrounds, ethnicity's, and races. Some of these students have substantial prior education; others have much less. Some of these students receive special education services, some students are in the gifted and talented program, and some are far below basic in terms of academic achievement. About 1/3 of these students have access to computers at home. There are several students in this class who can move ahead much more quickly, but some are not yet ready to let them go very far. Most of my students in Algebra 1 will not go to work unless they physically see you looking at them. Some can do most of the problems but they don’t want to participate in class discussion. They prefer to sit and do the work than to go to the board or recite. Most students listened to what I explained rather than working ahead on their own.
