"Wonder" by R.J. Palacio explores the life of August, a fifth-grade student living with a rare physical disability. The story explores the life of Auggie as he transitions into new situations in his life, similar to the many changes my fifth-graders experience in this pivotal year of their lives. Students are not only able to practice essential reading skills like exploring new themes, character analysis, and point of view with this text, but also gain empathy, kindness, and self-confidence from reading a book that encompasses all of those qualities. With this text, students will explore the "wonder" and powerful impact literature can have on their lives.
