My 7th and 8th graders are part of a small learning community where teachers collaborate together to integrate math, science, English, and history to make learning more interesting and relevant to the students. Though it is small, our student body is diverse. Each student is unique, and they learn to work together to support each other through challenges as a school community. Through self-chosen service learning projects, students feel empowered to make change, whether it be in their local community to raise awareness of how to stop bullying, or globally to impact an issue they care about somewhere else in the world such as poverty, malnutrition, or pollution. In my classroom, students learn that the learning process is first, to see a pattern, then, to practice that pattern until they are ready to perform successfully. Throughout this process, students must learn to persevere: to work through mistakes and keep going even when things get difficult.
