I've done this project the past 4 years with my students and it really motivates to read. This year, unfortunately, the funding was not provided. The books selected are predicted to win either a Caldecott or Newbery award. Students will read and explore books proposed to to be award winners and then nominate the ones they think will receive certain awards. We will hold a vote and our own reception to announce and honor our chosen winner and runner up. Then, in January, students will have the opportunity to view the ALA awards to see which books have actually been chosen. The students will make a display announcing the award winning books, which will be on view in the school for other students to receive book recommendations from. This project has always excited my students about reading, even those who are reluctant.
Students discover reading is fun and are intrinsically motivated to read. I am looking forward to the prospects of building life-long readers through this project. Life long readers are more prone to a successful life. Students will be able to independently read the books and some will also be shared during our class read aloud time. Students will be able to participate in read aloud discussions and book clubs where they have the opportunity to participate in a community of readers.
